Our South Africa roadtrip plans

Our South Africa roadtrip plans

It feels like I’ve been talking about it for ages but I am so excited to finally be able to announce the plans for our visit to South Africa next month. It is a country I have been waiting a long time to explore and what better way to start our adventure than with a wedding followed by a road trip?

So here’s our rough plan so far, although knowing us things can (and will!) end up changing along the way…

Days 1&2 – We’ll spend out first couple of days exploring Johannesburg, including a tour of the Soweto township and a visit to the Apartheid Museum.

Days 3-5 – Our friends’ wedding weekend will take place at a reserve outside Pretoria. I’m sure it’s going to be absolutely gorgeous.

Days 6&7 – Our road trip begins! Our first stop will be the Pilanesberg Game Reserve for a couple of days of safari. I’m hoping to spot the Big 5!

Will we get lucky?

Day 8 – This will be a long driving day as we head south. We will drive through Kimberley to see the Big Hole mine and then on to the semi-arid desert of Karoo.

Day 9 – We’ll explore the amazing Owl House in Karoo, which was created by the reclusive artist Helen Martins, before heading towards Oudtshoorn, which has the claim to fame of being the Ostrich Capital of the World.

Day 10 – Today we’ll drive from Oudsthoorn to Knysna along the Garden Route. We’ll have the chance to explore the Knysna Heads, stuff ourselves on Knysna oysters and try to locate the famous sea horses.

Day 11 – We’ll drive to our friend’s beach house in Hermanus, with some Garden Route stops along the way.

Days 12-18 – We’ll be dividing our time between Hermanus and Cape Town so we can have a bit of a chill out, as well as do some exploring. Places on the list include, of course, Table Mountain, Robben Island, Cape Point and Betty’s Bay penguin colony.

We’re doing the road trip with a group of friends, including the newlyweds, so I know it’s going to be lots of fun. I can’t wait! If you want to hear about what we’re getting up to then I’ll be updating the blog and also tweeting using the hashtag #SAroadtrip.

So what do you think? Have you visited any of these places before?
